On May 15, 1971 the Dubai International Airport was officially opened by the ruler H.H. Shaikh Rashid bin Said al-Maktoum in the presence of the rulers of the other shaikhdoms and other prominant figures in the Arab World. The opening was planned to coincide with the 14th General Assembly of the Association of Travel and Tourist Offices of the Arab World. The Assembly was convened from May 15-20 with about two hundred and fifty representatives present.

The new airport, which was previously portrayed on the 1 Riyal stamp of the Fifth Devinitive set (Issued December 14, 1970), was built at a cost of 4.1 million pounds Sterling. It includes a taxiway and a concrete apron capable of handling several Jumbo jets at one time. The airport facilities include a magnificent restaurant and in emergencies special rooms can be converted to house 400 passenters.
